The Januarius MacGahan statue in New Lexington struck me as an oddity in this Appalachian foothill town in Ohio. What was an Eastern Block style statue doing here?
I had to look him up when I got home. Turns out he was a writer and New Lexington, Ohio native who wrote articles that when published, exposed the atrocities being committed against the Bulgarian people by the Turks in the 1870's. Those articles made it impossible for the British to maintain their support for Turkey and thus allowed for a Bulgarian state.
